Last Friday, it was announced that 'MARCH: Book One' was named as one of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2013, and one of only five graphic novels named.
Perhaps more importantly, when I was 13 I went to Dragon Con by myself for the first time. My mom was really worried about the people I would meet and if they would be good folks. Well, one of the people I met that year was Jeff Smith who was right in the middle of his legendary BONE run. He was so nice. He talked to me for a while and I told him how I'd love to make my own comics someday. He said not to give up, to do what I love to do, and he did a great sketch on a backer board that has hung on the wall in every house I've ever lived in since that day. I'll try and take a picture of the sketch and post it but, more to the point, to be on the same list as Jeff Smith is a huge thrill and a greater honor.
To all the comic creators out there, never underestimate the impact you're going to have on that awkward teenager that comes up to talk to you. Someday he might come back and give you a copy of his own book.
